At Kanheri, the lush green hills and dense forests create a serene and secluded atmosphere. The ancient rock-cut caves, with their intricate carvings and serene statues of the Buddha, stand as silent witnesses to centuries of meditation and devotion. The sunlight filtering through the foliage casts dappled shadows on the stone pathways, enhancing the ambiance of the site. The peaceful silence of the monastery is occasionally interrupted by the soft rustling of leaves and the distant calls of birds.

The Kanheri Caves are a group of 129 caves and rock-cut monuments located in Mumbai. It is importance is heightened by the fact that Kanheri was an important seat of learning (or university) for Buddhism during the 5th and 6th centuries.

Itinerary

    This half day tour takes you on an immersive journey back in time as you travel back 2000 years and connect with the monks of Kanheri, which was one of the great Buddhist monasteries of its time. Here you will learn about the art of meditation and the essence of the Buddhist Faith. Understand the different layers of the Buddhist belief system and how monks from Kanheri took Buddhism to Japan. Marvel at how nature, history and spirituality are woven together in the verdant hills of Kanheri.

    Round it off with a special Lunch, cooked using recipes from the kitchens of the great Mauryan Emperor Ashoka who was a great Ambassador of the Buddhist faith.

    What to expect

    • This monument in set amongst caves, you need a moderate level of fitness participate
    • The caves are inhabited by monkeys. So please hold on to your belongings. Please do not feed the monkeys
    • A sumptious traditional meal of Mauryan cuisine (Veg / Non-Veg options available) curated by Dr. Kurush Dalal will be served at the end of the tour

    • The tour is experienced best on foot. Hence, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes
    • Due to uneven surfaces, this tour is not recommended for those with walking disabilities
    • This tour is not wheelchair accessible and unsuited for pregnant women
    • Cotton clothing and a hat is preferred to prevent the heat of the day
    • Please wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders as this is an area worship
    • Evenings will be pleasant and cool
    • We aim to provide breaks for rest with refreshments during the tour, however as these are immersive walks, the closest breakpoint/ restroom may be a distance away

    • - 100% payment is refundable upto 10 days in advance of the tour
    • - 50% payment is refundable upto 5 days in advance of the tour
    • - Non refundable after 5 days leading up to the tour
